Generate Underworld Mission

What is this Madness!!!

Spacegamer.com - Standard Barony Mission:

This uses the Tarot Card to Generate a "Standard" Mission on the Fly as described in Designing Fantasy Missions as part of the Barony Set. (Standard means it is not focused exclusively on an Underworld.) No attempt is made here to define each of the finer points.

To begin, determine who the mission is offered to and call them the Party Leader (to accept / reject Mission).

Note: This mission is temporary. Copy it out now if you want it. (It pastes nicely into Word.)

Patron:
- 4 Coins: Hero of Blade; a person with a great power or skill that only he has. Usually a person who is the ordained wielder of a magical blade that has a purpose that the hero has sworn to follow. Magic, strange and exotic, can poison and pervert the world (once again), should its dark forces not be checked. Patron is one of these safeguards ("I wield the sword that causes foul worms to rile and flee"). However, all these guys have personal problems as well; Mission may not relate to the hero's greater goals. At times, hero is himself a victim, trapped by fate into duties that have long been a burden. Some await the next chosen one to take their duties from them. Inverted, Society of Watchers; group that is waiting for an event to take place or a discovery to be made. These are specialized groups of scholars or prophets that await the fates (or alignment of stars). In the mean time, these groups have their own survival to consider ("we await the child with the mark described by the ancients; until then we run this city for him").

Mission:
- 4 Swords: Perform an important or secret Mission for the ruler. Inverted, perform an important or secret Mission for the ruler, but task is described as a routine escort duty.

Obstacle:
- Ace Rods: Elusive and talented pickpocket becomes aware of job. Inverted, powerful tax collector and his entourage will be met; these will try to confiscate most of the group's wealth.
- Empress: All opponents are zealots -- never rout, fight to the death even to the last. Inverted, when faced by opponents, your Patron provided troops go berserk with blood-lust, often injuring themselves as they mindlessly flay their weapons.

Motivation:
- Queen Rods: Needs cronies and lackeys to praise his actions. Inverted, thinks players too insignificant to threaten his stature or too stupid to command.

Finances:
- (Inverted) 10 Cups: Recent catastrophe exhausted wealth; funds are meager. Inverted, Patron covers the fact a personal disaster has consumed much of his wealth; he feigns a rich lifestyle.

Rival:
- 3 Rods: Ship Owner or Ship Builder. Inverted, Master Navigator or Seamen.

Phases

On the way to the Mission Climax, the Party will travel through three game Phases which may be short or long (depending on the Tarot cards drawn). These represent the obstacles and challenges along the way to the Ultimate Climax of the Mission.
